What it requires

Requires packaging to be designed so that weight and volume are reduced to the minimum necessary for functionality, taking account of shape and material. It also bans, from the same date, packaging that fails the Annex IV performance criteria and packaging whose characteristics exist only to increase perceived product volume, naming double walls, false bottoms and unnecessary layers, subject to narrow exemptions such as protected designs. This is the sales-packaging counterpart to the Art. 24 empty-space rule, which covers grouped, transport and e-commerce packaging instead.

This is a plain-English summary for planning, not legal advice, and it is not a substitute for the text. Read Article 10 in full at EUR-Lex, and verify against the Official Journal before any compliance decision.
